Sellers' FAQs

How do I register?

Just go to the REGISTER button at the top of the site and fill in your details.

I've forgotten my password - help!

No problem - just follow this link lost password.

How much does it cost?

You can have 5 images live on site for free. You can upgrade to a PN Pro account for just £10 a year and upload as many images as you like, and benefit from discounts and special offers on photography related goods and services.

Do I need to sign a contract?

Nope. When you register we ask that you read and agree to our Seller's Terms and Conditions, and that's it.

How and when do I get my commission?

We pay commission every 8 weeks. Details about this, and more about selling your photos is in the Seller's Pack which can be read by anyone without having to register first.

Can I sell my pictures on other image libraries if I sell them on yours?

Of course.

Can I be told who has bought my pictures?

No... it should be obvious really, but here goes.... if we put buyer and seller in touch with each other then what would be the point in us spending all our time and money running PN? We'd be running a free introduction service for photographers. We also have a duty to keep client information confidential - buyers and sellers.

Why is my picture web res only when I submitted a large file?

We view every image in detail at 100% and do full colour test prints on those we have a question mark about. If we think a buyer could have an issue with the quality of an image they buy at print res, then we will select it to be available from picturenation at web res only.

Why've you rejected an image of mine that another library accepted?

picturenation checks every single image before making it live. Not all image libraries do. We not only check the image, but the information you send with the picture, the spellings and the relevance of the tags.
picturenation serves the commercial, editorial, educational and private markets with all royalty-free sales. These genres all have different issues to deal with regarding copyrights and permissions and we consider them all when processing images sent in.
Different libraries have different criteria, which is why it's a good idea to submit your images to more than one.

Do you accept scans?

Only if they're absolutely perfect.
It's disheartening for us, as well as you, when we get great subject content but the scan is naff. You'd be amazed how many scans we get with hairs across the picture, finger prints, and smears. It's a shame. If you are going to go to the trouble of scanning your images and submitting them, then you must make sure they are scanned at the highest possible quality.

I already have a model release form - can I send you that?

If you already have your own release forms to accompany your images then you can send us a copy of your own - as long as it has all the information on it that we require. You can view and download our release forms from the link available in your Seller's Pack.

How do I get a release form from a dead relative?

Good question. Read your Seller's Pack.

Why do I need an art release for artwork that is mine?

We need you to confirm that the artwork is your own work and copyright and not someone else's.

Can I change my e-mail address?

Yes - follow the link in your 'my picturenation' account.

Why do I need to leave my images on your site for 6 months?

It costs us time and money to process your images. We check your tags and spellings and add categories for you as well. If we do that for your images and then you remove them days later then you're wasting our time and money. We need to have the chance to get sales and revenue from your images for us and for you.

Why do some images need release forms and others don't?

We try and cover this in your Seller's Pack. It depends on how the picture is to be used by the buyer. Newspapers and information sites are classed as editorial - and releases are not needed. Commercial use - using and image to sell a service or a product - does require releases forms and increases the saleability of your images.

What sort of files do you accept?

We take JPEGS only at the moment. We will consider news images sent from mobile phones but not images that are not newsworthy. All images are prepared as compressed files for website use at about 400 x 400 pixels. Larger files you send in will be prepared in up to 2 bigger sizes of about 2000 x 2000 pixels and up to 6000 x 6000 pixels.

Why don't you have FTP uploads?

It is permanently on the agenda. But, we don't make members pass a quality test at PN - we want everyone to have go because there are some really good amateur photographers out there. And we've seen many of our members grow and develop more skills over time and get more sales. It means that we get a lot of images sent in that are not good enough quality to be accepted. If we introduce FTP at the moment, it would increase the amount of unusable pictures we're sent and slow down the approval waiting time.

Why do you charge for PN Pro?

As we've said above, we encourage everyone to have a go at selling their pictures and a lot of amateur photographers have made hundreds of pounds commission already with PN. Developing and running a picture library is a very expensive business and we are a small library without the financial backing that funds many of the big American libraries. The majority of our members are quite happy to pay 0.83p per month for the service we provide and enjoy the interaction whether they make sales or not. They also benefit from discounts and offers to a greater value than the membership fee.

Can I close my account if I want to?

You can request this by e-mail when your images have been live for 6 months. Your images will be deleted and not retrievable, and any commissions owing will be paid on the next pay date.

Can I send in a CD ROM of my pictures?

No. Sorry. We are purely an online operation and images submitted to PN must be uploaded by the copyright holder.
